Those moments that tug at our heartstrings and bring a little
tear to our eye... those moments that make us go "awwww... Harls!" sniff!
10: HARLEY’S HOLIDAY
– HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN…
Harley’s been released from
Arkham Asylum only for everything to go wrong on her! After a day of mayhem
and madness, she’s escorted back to Arkham by the Dark Knight, woefully reciting,
“home again, home again, jiggity jig”.
Poor Harls! She really wanted
to make a go of it and her relapse wasn’t her fault – although the speed
with which she snapped would seem to indicate she really wasn’t ready. But
she really wanted to be!
9: DETECTIVE #831 – IF YOU THINK
ARKHAM’S SCARY FOR DOCTORS…
Harley explains to the B-Man why she took a little vengeance on Scarface’s
new squeeze, Sugar. When she was first incarcerated in Arkham, Arnold Wesker
made the effort to make her smile…
You gotta feel for Harley, curled
up in a corner of the rec-room, terrified! Most of the major-league rogues
seem to adjust very quickly to that awful place. It adds extra poignancy and
pathos to demonstrate it ain’t a bed of roses and who better to show us than
Harls?
8: JOKER: LAST LAUGH #1 – YOU HAVE
TO LOVE ME!
In a flashback sequence, Harley relates a moment when Joker rejects her,
while her frantic thoughts ramble: I love you and you have to love me!
I don’t really think the scene is characterised well
for The Joker, to be honest, but somehow it manages to capture the full-throttle
agony that Harley would feel if Joker really did outrightly reject her. (Which
he never has done, except in those couple of poorly written examples!)
7: BATMAN ADVENTURES #28 – NO… I
DON’T THINK IT WILL.
Harley has sprung to Joker’s aid, leaping to catch a vial of toxin which
makes a person temporarily psychotic! Unfortunately, in the process, she
ends up inhaling it and goes raving! The comic finishes with Harley in a straitjacket,
drooling while fantasising about a marriage proposal from Mistah J. A doctor
suggests to Leland they sedate her, it might help with the delusions. To
which Dr Leland replies “No, Doctor… I don’t think it will.” Waw!
Ah, Harley
always longs for something from Mistah J she will simply never have… normalcy.
It’s the paradox of how sweetly cute she looks, beaming away at her delightful
delusions against how very sad and tragic it is as well.
6:
HARLEY & IVY #1 – I NEVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!
Oops! Harley uses a rare plant as a weapon against Batman and Ivy ain’t
pleased! Harley doesn’t get it, of course – what’s the big deal, it’s just
a plant! But when Ivy attacks her in the shower and then tells her she never
wants to see her again, Harley is heartbroken.
Waw! Those tear-filled eyes,
that wobbling lip! Poor Harley! She really didn’t see what was so wrong
with what she did. But she does understand friendship and to lose her best
friend is almost as bad as losing Mistah J… poor Harls!
5: BATMAN ADVENTURES #16 – DISSOLVING
THE HARLEY & IVY PARTNERSHIP
Ivy crashes Harley & Joker’s wedding, causing a disruption long enough
that Batman shows up to stop the wedding altogether. She disappears and Harley
vows that for this, she and Ivy are no longer friends. And no matter how
long it takes… one day she’ll kill Ivy.
What an awful moment! There’s
always been conflict between these three, but Harley’s loyalty and capacity
for love meant that she never really chose one over the other. But Ivy crossed
a line this time… ultimately no one can come between her and her Puddin’
– not when Harley was so close to getting her ultimate wish! The worst part
is, it wasn’t even really Ivy. I’m sure the creative team were planning to
resolve this fight, but the book got cancelled! Boo!
4: HARLEY & IVY – I MISS HIM
ALREADY
Harley bungles a scheme and Joker kicks her out. She declares furiously
that she’ll pull a big heist to show him, and then she’ll! be laughing at
him She turns and starts to march away but after a couple of steps her shoulders
slump and her head sinks. “I miss him already.” She mopes.
Waaaw!
Cute and so sad. Harley loves her Puddin’ oh so very much to be without him
is agony. She piiiiiiines! And even though it’s comedic, it plucks at your
heart at the same time. When someone loves so much, it’s agony to be without
it.
3: BATMAN & ROBIN ADVENTURES
#18 – YOU’RE NOT FUNNY
Harley has been trying soooo hard to make her morose Puddin’ laugh. But
she is repeatedly unsuccessful until finally he says: “Stop trying to make
me laugh. You’re not funny.” A distraught Harley runs away weeping: “You
didn’t have to say THAT!”
Can you imagine anything worse
for Joker to say to Harley? Like a knife to the heart! Poor darling!
2: GOTHAM ADVENTURES #10 – NOTHING
BROKEN… BUT MY HEART
Harley is supposedly rehabilitated and ‘over’ Mistah J. After Joker tries
to kill her, Nightwing hauls Joker away while Harley reassures him she is
fine. “Nothing wounded but my pride”, she says. “Nothing broken…but my heart.”
She then retrieves a photo of her and Joker and cries over it.
Sniff sniff! She was trying
to so hard to pretend she didn’t care. That it didn’t matter anymore. That
she was completely all back together and over her Puddin’. That she was moving
on! And she almost convinced us. Right up until that last page. Talk about
plucking at your heart strings!
1: MAD LOVE – CIRCUS… HE SAID IT
WAS THE CIRCUS…
Batman is disillusioning Harley, revealing that the abused childhood Joker
told her about was fabricated. Batman begins to recite a story Joker told
a guard once. “There was only one time I ever saw Dad really happy… he took
me to the ice show when I was seven.” “Circus,” Harley replies, a picture
of heart-broken despair, “He said it was the circus.”
Harley thought he’d shared something
with her – that he’d never told anyone. That it was something sacred and
unique between them. But it was all a lie. Not only that, it wasn’t even
a new lie – just the same old thing he’d told many others. It must’ve been
agonising and our hearts really did bleed for our little Harley!
