My personal opinion of the current Top Ten Joker/Harley
"squee" moments. Subject to change! ;)
10. JOKER/MASK
– I’LL NEVER CHANGE
Harley is worried The Mask will change her beloved Puddin’.
He reassures her and gives her a big ole lovin’ kiss before the Bats interrupts.
Whilst this series is
not a fan favourite for many good reasons, I really love this little moment
of unusual gentle affection between J&HQ. Very, very cute!
9. GOTHAM ADVENTURES #14 – I’LL TAKE WHAT
I CAN GET
A mind-controlled Joker enthusiastically welcomes Harley
back to Arkham and compliments her on her wonderful schemes, declaring
that he wants to hear ‘all about it’. Harley knows he’s only being nice
because he’s been affected by the mind-controlling drug she’d been using,
but states: “But you’re also a dangerous, murdering psychopath… so I’ll
take what I can get.”
It’s just so cute
to see a mind-controlled Joker holding Harley’s hand and smiling tenderly
down at her, even though you know it’s not going to last! I also like to
wonder if he’s at all aware of what’s going on and what the later reaction
will be…
8. WILD CARDS – TWO OF A KIND
Harley’s jealousy of Ace has been roused by Batman’s
goadings and she comes back to open up a can of whup-ass on her beloved
Puddin’. But he placates her, saying they’re ‘two of a kind’ and she’ll
always come back to him. She jumps into his arms for a squishy hug.
Yeah I know he goes
ballistic on her almost immediately afterwards, but I just really love
seeing Joker cuddle Harley so affectionately. It just doesn’t happen often
enough – although if it did happen more often, it’d be totally out of character
and I’d hate it. Oh well. Hehehe.
7. MAD LOVE – IT FELT LIKE A KISS
A broken and bruised Harley Quinn is wheeled back to
her cell at Arkham, bitterly swearing Joker off for good. But there’s a
rose in her cell with a little note: “Feel better soon – J”, and Harley’s
love is back in bloom once more. When Dr. Leland asks her what it felt like
to give everything she had to someone who used and abused her, Harley responds:
“It felt like a kiss!”
Is it cheating, because
this scene doesn’t directly feature Mistah J? That’s why it comes in at
number seven instead of further down the scale. One of those perfect, beautiful
moments illustrating the cyclical nature of Harley’s infatuation and the
masochism inherent in it. Gorgeous!
6. HARLEY AND IVY – YOU FOUND ME!
Joker’s tracked Harley down to the toxic dump her and
Ivy are using as a hideout. Harley jumps joyously into his arms for a cuddle
and pat on the head, ecstatic he’s gone to the trouble, despite his less
than above-board means.
It’s the way he shuts
his eyes and pats her head that does it for me. Ostensibly, his main motivation
for tracking her down was to nick the swag she and Ivy had hauled, but
we all saw how he was suffering without her – and the photo of her on his
desk. A little reminder to her of his awesomeness and he knew she’d come
back of her own accord! (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) But I also love Harley's
hopeful but disbelieving 'Puddin'?' followed by her ecstatic 'ya found me!' and leaping into his arms. A great moment!
5. BATMAN ADVENTURES #28 – ZOSE
EYES, ZOSE LIPS…
Harley, disguised as a German Psychiatrist in Arkham,
becomes distracted by Joker’s ‘very, very handsome face’ whilst extolling
his virtues to the dubious doctors. She throws herself on Joker for a passionate
kiss, much to everyone’s shock. Finishing the smooch, she leaves her false
moustache behind on Joker’s mouth and turns to everyone with an oblivious:
‘Vhat?’
This moment is just hysterically
funny. It still gets me to laugh out loud. It’s too precious for words.
Even though Joker is not really a voluntary participant in this moment,
Harley getting carried away with her musings is too golden, and the sight
of her moustache on Joker’s mouth is achingly hilarious.
4. HARLEY QUINN #5 – THE LOOK OF LOVE
Harley’s first session with Joker. He begins strangling
her only to back off abruptly, suddenly startled by a look he sees in her
eyes – the look of love. Commenting to himself that a woman like her only
comes along ‘once in a lifetime’, he turns back to his doctor, leans over
her with a charming smile and enquires: “So what did you want to talk about
- - Harley?”
DROOL. This is sexy
in all the wrong (and subsequently, right) ways! Joker straddling Harley
with his hands around her neck, the look on Harley’s face as she gazes
at him, Joker’s quiet realisation followed by his cunning. It’s delicious
and really sets the dynamic between the two up.
3. HARLEQUINADE – BABY, YOU’RE THE GREATEST!
Joker goads Harley into shooting at him and she does
so, only for the gun to be revealed as a trick one. Harley cowers but Joker
laughs and tells her she’s “the greatest!” welcoming Harley into his arms
for a big ole hug and, I’m sure, a smooch if it wasn’t for the censors.
I just about died the
first hundred times I watched this scene, and it still makes my heart flutter.
It’s just something about the interaction, the glorious facial expressions,
the little ‘ee!’ Harley makes and the way Joker sweeps her up into his arms
and swings her around, not to mention the camera panning back so they can
be surrounded by the little heart-shaped balloon. Classic Joker/Harley!
2. HARLEY QUINN – I HATE THOSE FEELINGS!
Joker traps Harley in an amusement park rocket, set to
hurtle into space and end her life. As the rocket takes off, Joker makes
a confession – he’s starting to care for Harley, the first time he can
remember in many years having feelings such as those. Only problem is:
he hates those feelings and sees the solution as getting rid of her!
This is just so perfectly
Joker. The solution to uncomfortable, inconvenient feelings of affection?
Destroy the object of them! Yes, it’s twisted, sick and wrong and that’s
why we love it!
1. EMPEROR JOKER – MY DAME IN LIGHTS
Joker shares his very personal reasons for wanting to
destroy the Universe, finishing with the revelation that in the new, blank
Universe, people like him will “never come into existence”. Harley entreats
him to spare her life, saying she thought everything she’d done for him might
count for something. With an uncharacteristically soft look, Joker urges her
to “c’mere” before tenderly kissing her. He then turns her into a constellation
of stars and tells her she has “the best seat in the house for Armageddon”;
finishing with “I always wanted to see my dame in lights… heh. Even in a
moment of abject saccharine, I still got it.”
I almost cried when
I first read this page. It is so exquisitely beautiful and understated,
whilst remaining true to Joker and Harley’s characters. It is one of the
rare moments of pure affection on Joker’s part, without a manipulative reason
behind it. Obviously, Joker wasn’t going to “spare” Harley, just not his
style. Instead he made a romantic gesture of Hellenic proportions, transforming
the one person who’d always loved him no matter what he did or was, into
something incredibly beautiful and enduring. My absolute favourite squee
moment.
