Batman #570 & Detective #737: “The Code”

Main stars:
Harley Quinn
The Joker

Writer:
Bronwyn Carlton

Penciller:
Mike Deodato
Tom Morgan

Colourist:
Pamela Rambo

Synopsis:
It’s No Man’s Land & Joker is battling for territory while adjusting to the new presence in his life – Harley! Harley, meanwhile, doesn’t feel like she’s getting enough attention from her Puddin’. Off on a reconnaissance mission, she discovers a book called “The Code: Rules of L’amour”. Upon discovering she’s been doing it ‘all wrong’, she immediately begins applying The Code. The result? Mistah J begins pursuing her, bringing her flowers, wanting to take her on dates and completely confused as to why Harley’s not so slavishly adoring anymore!

The Good:
Hee hee! This story is so much fun, especially for a shipper like me. I don’t know why more of Harley’s mainstream stories couldn’t be more like this. There’s a part of me that feels the fact a woman wrote this story plays a part in the depth of understanding of the relationship that’s shown here. Nothing against the guys, of course, but we ladies seem to pick up on subtleties a little more frequently. ;)

It’s fun to see the tables turned for a change - to see Joker pursuing Harley’s attention instead of the other way around. It’s also totally squee-worthy when he gets jealous of Josh and removes the competition! Harley trying so hard to be distant and cool around Mistah J is solid gold.

Seeing the intricacies of courting and romance played out by two psychotic clowns is, of course, unmissable. And it’s also a lovely way to parody those silly sorts of ‘rule’ books which rely on the idea people are nothing more than walking clichés.

I also really like the fact this story is written by a woman. I want more Joker/Harley stories written by the ladeez! The art in both issues is very nice as well. Harley was a little off for me in the second issue, but Joker was divine.

This story also contributes to the greater NML plot, too, setting the stage for a rivalry between Petit and Mistah J.

The Bad:
The steamy bedroom scene that was cut during the editing process. Kidding! As far as I know no such scene existed. You know, I warned you all on the main page that I wasn’t going to waste time doing reviews for things I didn’t like, so don’t tell me I’m uncritical.

Overall:
4/5
