The following is a brief overview of
the major women who have most interacted with our Clown Prince of Crime.
It has been noted by
Mr. Freeze that Joker gets a disturbing amount of mail from female fans. Joker
has also frequently been seen in the company of attractive women, though he
seems to employ them more as props than anything else.
There is no doubt a creature as charismatic and compelling as Joker would
be powerfully attractive to certain types of people – male and female both
– but most of these wind up dead in short order and are clearly meaningless
to him.
However, the women below have either meant something to him - or the person
he was - or served some purpose he needed met.

The Wife – “Jeannie”
We actually don’t know if this lovely lady even existed. It’s possible
Joker simply imagined her or made her up. He’s fond of altering his past.
(We’ll ignore Leiberman’s contribution in Hush Returns which ‘confirmed’
her existence. Joker works best as a character with a mysterious past and
I think it’s been retconned anyway.)
At any rate, Jeannie – pregnant and wife to our mysterious J, supposedly
killed in a freak accident – does reveal an interesting alternative aspect
to Mistah J, one not seen much, if at all. Whenever he recollects her, which
isn’t often, it is with pain. He feels bitterness about her loss. If Jeannie
was ever real, or if she is only a creation of his crazed imagination, she
stands as a symbolic remnant of his long-lost humanity. Perhaps she even
betrays some much-smothered desire for what once used to be…

The Fiancee
- Rebecca Brown
When Joker went “sane” he was as different as could be to the sociopath
we know and adore. He became a quiet, gentle, mild man, working as an accountant,
with a love of old movies and classic music. And he met the girl of his dreams
– an equally old-fashioned, gentle and lovely girl named Rebecca. The two
fell madly, absolutely, passionately in love. It was just like in the movies.
Of course, when Joker found out Batman was actually not dead, he killed
Joseph Kerr and came back with a vengeance, immediately forgetting his sweetheart
and heading back to the love of his life. But… abducting a female politican
he intended to kill, Joker unexpectedly sees Rebecca’s face. And without
knowing why, lets Councilwoman Kenner go.
As with Jeannie, Rebecca represents something Joker has long since buried
– but which perhaps beats still, however faintly.

The Girlfriend
– Harleen Quinzel, “Harley Quinn”
Of all of Joker’s paramours, Harley is the one to have had the most profound
impact on him -as Joker. Harley fell in love with Joker; not mild-mannered
Joseph Kerr or a struggling, nameless comedian. Harley believes she sees
something in Joker – perhaps it is the last little glimmer left embodied by
Jeannie and Rebecca – and adores him for it, as well as for everything else
that makes up our J. Though Joker is incapable of the kind of human emotion
felt by Joseph Kerr or Nameless Comedian, it seems that the longer Harley
exists in his life, the more something resembling love and affection is awakened.
Certainly his treatment and tolerance of her over the years, whilst still
abusive and built around his power over her, has become softer and more fond.
Harley is unique amongst everyone for being the person who has gotten closest
to him for the longest amount of time – and yet still breathes. In fact,
Joker has openly admitted to trying to kill her – because he cares about
her.
It is not exaggerating to say Harley is the most significant romantic
relationship Joker has ever had (although his obsession with Batman is definitely
a kind of romance) or indeed, the most significant relationship, full stop
– because she has penetrated the monstrous exterior of JOKER.

The Lesser
Secrets

The Affair -
Cassandra Hahn
Cassandra Hahn first encountered Joker when she and her station – GothTV
– held Joker in confinement and aired a series of reality programs with him
as the star. Mistah J played along of course, loving the attention he was
getting – and relishing the absolute power he had as the media buffoons fell
over themselves for their ratings.
Cassandra is drawn to Joker, to his mystery and his danger, as well as
the ratings goldmine he offers, and seeing an opportunity Joker wastes no
time in seducing her.
However, Joker feels no attraction to her - instead he’s getting
off on the power he holds, the ability he has to make her do whatever he
wants for him – she is nothing more than a pawn to him, and a way of passing
time and manipulating events to suit him. Likewise, Cassandra ultimately
had no feelings for Joker, beyond being drawn to his power – she is using
him as much as he is her. Of course, she doesn’t really understand J – which
is driven home by the end of the series when he surprises her and changes
her life in a way she didn’t really anticipate – or want!

The Lover –
Terry Ammons
This little lady believed she could change Mistah J with her love. An
Assistant D.A in Gotham, she falls madly in love with Joker and swears herself
to making him hers and helping him to achieve his goals – whatever they
may be. She’s obsessed, and she thinks she can change him, rescue him, deliver
him. So she’s awful easy for Mistah J to manipulate.
Her infatuation is similar to Harley – but she isn’t a match for her.
Her life disintegrates quickly around her ears during her involvement with
J, and she is soon doing things she could never have dreamed of – and she’s
doing them out of fear of losing J. But her heart’s not really in it.
To Joker she is clearly just an object to use and manipulate – she herself
says there is no sort of physical intimacy between them and he knows the
mere threat of his leaving gets her to comply with whatever he demands. Much
like Harley, he creates her, but she’s more like a sketch, a first draft,
rather than the grand masterpiece that Harley is. She does not succeed in
getting under his skin as Harley does.

The Groupie
– Jewelee
Joker, along with most other villains, has been dumped on an alien planet
and left to rot. He wastes no time in establishing himself as leader of one
camp when the group splits into two. Jewelee, formerly the devoted wife of
Punch, seems drawn to Joker’s power and magnetic charm and is frequently
seen hanging off his arm, or close by his side.
Interestingly enough, Joker has not once acknowledged her – not with a
word, a look, or even with body language. Even when she has her arm looped
through his he seems oblivious to her presence. It remains to be seen exactly
what the nature of their ‘relationship’ is – if he’s actively playing her,
or if she’s just decided to latch onto him and he’s tolerating it.
